Missing Female Subject Kirkwood/Lake Margaret
Alpine County Sheriff's Office was notified that a Kirkwood-area lodge guest had not returned to nor used her room for 3 nights. Subsequent investigation showed that the missing person report was in Alpine County but the "place last seen," her automobile, was parked at a trailhead, located in El Dorado County.
Alpine County and some El Dorado SAR personnel started a hasty search on 8-24-07, with full callout on Saturday 8-25-07, which consisted of deputies from Alpine, El Dorado, and Sacramento Counties; SAR members from Alpine, El Dorado(West Slope/Tahoe), Sacramento counties, Douglas County, NV and CARDA folks (search dog personnel) from the Bay Area.
The 69 year-old female embarked on a day trip on 8-21-07 after inquiring about local hiking and stating she was an experienced hiker.
Teams were deployed to assignments starting about 700am. About 90 minutes later, the CHP helicopter (H-20) spotted a subject, fitting the DMV description, in a drainage, west of Lake Margaret. CHP personnel landed and hiked to meet the subject, who was airlifted back to Command Post and to waiting Fire/Paramedic personnel. In the meantime, ground searchers (EMT/First Responders) were closing in on this area. Two different trailing dogs were following a scent trail, that might have led to the subject, who was medically stable, but taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Before her trip to the hospital, the subject gave a brief interview to Ron B.

Missing Alzheimer's patient- Strawberry

Family members reported him missing and he tends to wander off. He had a ankle-bracelet with transmitter beacon. CHP helo assisted with signal hunting.
Break came when reverse 911 calls to local residents resulted in a tip where he had been sighted the night before.

Silver Lake- Amador Mutual Aid
65 year old male, experienced hiker was reported missing and separated from his ovenight hiking party. Mutual aid callout for 6-10-07. Volunteers from several counties responded.
Subject found on second full day of search. Synopsis provided by SAR 007.
The subject was located in good shape just before 2 pm today in the center of the area bounded by the Beebee Lakes, several miles to the east of Silver Lake. This was a happy outcome most of us had dared not hope for.
He had gotten lost because, despite being experienced outdoors and familiar with the area, his instincts had led him east instead of west. Worse, when his compass said he was going the wrong way, he disregarded it. He made the same mistake pilots sometimes do - he didn't trust his instruments. Fortunately he was equpped with his own sleeping bags and those of his two friends (he was supposed to carry them back to the car).
When he realized that he was lost, he stayed put, though he said it was hard to do. This probably accounts for the lack of clues. He had a fire burning all the time and when the helicopter showed up, he threw pine needles on it to make smoke. That's what led the helo to him - smart. There was nowhere to land so they had to hoist him on a cable and a winch.
El Dorado contributed 20+ people today alone (OHV, Management, Foot, and Mounted), plus the comm van and a portable repeater. There were several other counties represented, too. The helicopter, callsign Spartan 964, was from Fallon Naval Air Station, I believe. Ione Fire Department provided great food. Plasse's Resort made a comfortable (and scenic) base camp.
Amador expressed their heartfelt thanks for all the support. Without it, the outcome might not have been the same.

ELT Beacon; Plane Crash 4-9-07
An emergency locator beacon (ELT) triggered a response on the evening of 4-8-07 from the Alpine County Sheriff's Department. A pair of SAR members from Alpine County set out overnight trying to locate source of the beacon. At daybreak, teams from Tahoe SAR, joined by EDSAR, West Slope and H-20 (CHP helicopter) embarked to the search area. One team was inserted by motor vehicles, the remaining three teams (snowshoers and skiers) were delivered by H-20 or a CalStar helicopter.
The H-20 crew found the wreckage about 800am and followed footprints away from the wreckage for 1/2 mile, to where a dropped pack was found. One deceased individual, thought to be the pilot was found in the wreckage, south of Round Lake at 8,000 feet. The SAR was originally tagged as an Alpine County mutual aid, but the crash site was just inside the El Dorado County line, so EDSO took primary command on the search/recovery.
The command post was set up at the Tahoe SAR property in Meyers.
A Huey from the Fallon Naval Air Station joined in (their radio call- Longhorn One). They found the other plane occupant 1.5 miles from the crash site, with serious injuries. The 35 year old female was airlifted to Washoe Medical Center in Reno.
Preliminary reports were that the plane fueled up at Tahoe Airport before 800pm last night. If so the plane was probably airborne for a few short minutes.
After the survivor recovery, plans were underway for EDSO coroner to visit site and with assistance from H-20 and possibly fire personnel, to recover the deceased pilot. The search teams were recalled and extracted by helicopter and motor vehicle.

A call came in Saturday afternoon to search for a mentally disabled young adult male in the Apple Hill area. The subject went missing from a school in the area. Search teams combed through the surrounding area which includes orchards, vineyards, and a golf course. Despite their efforts they were unable to locate the subject. At approximately 11:00pm the subject was spotted in Placerville at a fast food restaurant. Placerville Police Department was dispatched to the location and arranged for his safe return. Since the subject was not able to communicate effectively it was unclear how the subject was able to travel that distance.

A Mother and her 13 year old daughter spent a night in the woods when they failed to return from a hike along the Cosumnes River near River Pines. The pair had planned a picnic and a day of hiking along the river, but under estimated the time it would take to return home. The El Dorado and Amador Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to search for them Tuesday evening, but halted the search efforts at nightfall due to dangerous river conditions. Search efforts were resumed at daybreak and included 4x4’s, search dogs, foot and swift water teams and a CHP helicopter with FLIR. Shortly after daybreak the subjects were able to orient themselves and make their way home.
They reported that they had gone further than they had previously ever gone on such hikes and became lost when the sun went down. The two huddled together overnight to overcome rain showers and temperatures in the low 40’s.

The Sherriff’s Department received a call from the family of seven overdue subjects who were thought to be camping and four wheeling somewhere in the Ice House Lake area. The Sheriff’s office activated the SAR OHV team who was just returning from a SAR at Wright’s Lake (one of three other SARs that weekend). A search of the campgrounds surrounding Ice House Lake was performed but provided no evidence of the missing subjects. Subsequently, OHV team members were dispatched to cover the roads in the Crystal Basin area. As new intelligence came to light it was determined that the subjects may have been on the Wentworth Springs entrance to the Rubicon trail. A team of OHV units was dispatched to that area to investigate. While the units were enroute word came in that the subjects had made their way to the Ice House Resort, where they were recognized by the owners of that establishment. The subjects reported that they had suffered a flat tire while on the Rubicon Trail. Not having a spare tire or a jack, they remained with the vehicle until another four wheel drive vehicle came by and rendered assistance.

A lone motorist in a full sized SUV parked his vehicle near the intersection of Iron Mountain Road (Mormon Emigrant Trail) and North-South Road. When he returned to the vehicle it would not start. He used his cell phone to call for a tow truck. The tow company dispatched a truck but was unable to reach the subject due to extreme snow conditions.
After waiting over night for the tow truck the subject used his cell phone again and learned that the tow company was not going to be able to reach him. At this point he called his family who in turn called the Sheriff's Department. An OHV team was assembled and dispatched to rescue the subject.
The OHV team was able to traverse the deep snow and reach the subject. A Major storm front was moving in so the OHV team had to quickly load the subject into one of their vehicles and return.
On the team's return the winter storm hit, completely covering the tracks they made on their way in. Despite the adverse weather and near white-out conditions the OHV team was able to reach the subject and return safely.

Family Mired in Mud

A Family of 5, including both parents, two girls ages 7 and 6, and a 9 month old boy, were driving on Forest Service Road 11N80 when their minivan became stuck in a deep mud hole. While attempting to extricate the vehicle a group of Quad riders happened upon them. The quad riders informed the family that they would place a call for help once they could attain a signal on their cell phone.
Once the Quad riders reached their base camp they placed the call and emergency services were activated. The patrol deputy arrived at the base camp, interviewed the reporting party and convinced them to stay on scene to guide the rescue vehicles to the stranded subjects.
Three vehicles from the SAR OHV team were dispatched to the location to provide transport for the subjects. While the OHV team was in route a CHP helicopter made contact with the subjects and notified them to stay put and that help was on the way. The helicopter crew then radioed the GPS coordinates to the Sheriff’s Department dispatch. Due to the dense vegetation in the area the helicopter was unable to land.
The 3 OHV rigs arrived at the end of Forebay Road and met up with the Quad riders who guided them to the subjects. When the OHV team reached the subjects they noted that the minivan was mired down to the frame in the mud bog. The subjects were loaded into the OHV rigs and transported to their home in Camino.

Jan 1 2005: The "Vince" SAR. OHV interrupts a training mission near Ice House and starts toward the Georgetown area for an ovedue OHVer. While en route they make contact with subject via radio. He reports he is wet, his vehicle is stuck in the snow and he is down to a quarter tank of gas, but he is able to give his location. SAR responds 4WDs, snowcats, and snowmobiles. Subject is successfully rescued early that evening by Todd Crawford in the snowcat.

As announced on EDSAR-yahoo listserve; the following is a list of searches (incomplete); cadaver searches have been redacted until I receive more information on whether those cases will enhance the "Search Tales" on the ESARC website.
In the spirit of my wish for a SAR Management Summary document, when you respond to these individual searches with your crystal clear recollections of your role/knowledge in this search, keep in mind the following parameters that will provide us all much more useful information:
Date of callout; Date of finish; Geographic identifier of PLS AND IC location; Age; Gender; Occupation or endeavor (truckdriver, elderly citizen, berry picker, lone hiker, etc.); Key words as they relate to search (clues etc); IC(s); Types of assets used (SAR volunteers, equipment, outside agencies, # of EDSO staff); # of volunteers involved; Land, weather, search conditions;
;Pertinent other details;Disposition- found alive/dead/medical case; not found;Location in relation to PLS/ IC (in standard distance measurement); Pertinent rescue/recovery details; Pertinent facts for further SAR learning; and finally how did the outcome compare to the management scenario ):):)

Getting Ready To Launch
This is the document distributed at the January 2007 All-SAR meeting. We hope to have a partial list of searches on this site shortly
Call to action: SAR members to help us compose narratives of past searches
Partly due to recent efforts to get ESARC grants and a general desire to upgrade our great website, we are trying to flesh out narratives of memorable and instructive SARs since 2000.
Based on a pending unofficial list of EDSARC searches over the past six or so years, we have set up a dedicated website to harvest the recollections of members in order to publish more recent narratives of these searches.
Official launch will be announced soon on the EDSAR-yahoo groups email to all receiving members soon. This announcement will list selected searches and direct you to a site designed to collect your excerpts, recollections, tales, memories etc.:

This blog is not password-protected but it is also not Google-searchable so that the “raw data” is unlikely to be perused by the typical internet denizen. And we will not use subject names and limit poster (those adding Comments) information (requested) to first name and SAR number. Only the moderator (Alan-SAR 302) can make new posts, but anyone accessing this site can add Comments to these posts (each representing a specific search).
How Will This Work?
1) You will be directed to http://edsarnotes.blogspot.com by the EDSAR-Yahoo email. This initial email will have a shopping list of searches we want create narratives for.
2) Sequential blog posts will have as first post- a short paragraph describing subject, time, place, etc. In some cases they might be referred to by an acronym also, based on a site or type of subject.
3) Members can then reply to these listings (Comments) and add their first-person experience about this specific search
4) Possible details we will use include: PLS, family interview information (no names), geographic location, weather conditions, search conditions, clues, challenges, types of assets used, outcome, lessons learned etc. Remember the final product is for public consumption to learn about what we do.
5) A final draft will be composed from all the contributions. This will allow members to review this draft for factual accuracy. When completed, the narrative will be installed on the ESARC website, in this area: http://comspark.com/esarc/searches/index.html

Welcome El Dorado SAR members
The plan is to obtain single summary pages from OES/Todd (hopefully) of notable searches since 2000, scan them into .pdf files, post those files on the EDSAR yahoo site, so that only members can access them.
Then I will start threads with the bare details- First name or simply person, description, date(s) place, disposition. Then members can add their first person recollections from this search. Narratives will be composed from all this for posting on the ESARC website. No searches since 2000 are listed.
