Injured Kayaker Upper fork Cosumnes 6-23-11
Here's the story. Six young Germans on a kayaking vacation read about the Consumnes and decided to try it. Apparently it's one of the premier venues in CA. Thursday one of them hurt his shoulder, not sure how. Three companions kayaked 1.5 miles downstream for help, showed up on Rocky Bar road and contacted locals. About 15 SAR people responded to the callout. Calstar located the party but had no hoist and was unable to land in the darkness. Fire crews tried to hike in but turned around due to terrain. SAR OHV tried a couple of other access routes with no success. Foot teams considered hiking in but given the distance, terrain and water decided it was too risky at night. About 8 am (?) H20 did a one-skid landing, picked up the patient and flew him to Pioneer park. A county ambulance took him from there to Marshal.

River rescue saves South County kayaker
FAIR PLAY — A kayaker was rescued early Friday morning after becoming separated from his friends the night before.
El Dorado County sheriff’s Lt. Bryan Golmitz said a German-born kayaker, whose name was not available as of press time, was injured Thursday night while kayaking down the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection first responded to the scene and attempted to rescue and treat the injured kayaker. But river conditions, including its water and rapid flow, forced Calfire to request assistance from the El Dorado County sheriff’s Search and Rescue team.
More than a dozen Search and Rescue members arrived and formed a command post near the river and Slug Gulch and Rocky Bar roads.
But the search was suspended Thursday because of nightfall and re-established Friday morning at daybreak.
At 7 a.m. Friday, a California Highway Patrol H-20 helicopter was able to locate the kayaker and begin a rescue attempt.
The injured man was eventually hoisted up by the helicopter approximately 30 minutes later and was transferred to nearby Pioneer Park, where medics were on hand to provide medical assistance.
Golmitz said the kayaker suffered an injury to his shoulder, the severity of which was not known as of press time.
